Search Engine Optimisation: Guide

What is SEO?
SEO is the active practice of optimizing a web site by improving your website content as well as the hidden website structure and html code in order for search engines to list your website, thereby driving more traffic (and sales) to your business.

Why does my company/organization/website need SEO?
The major search engines are Google, Yahoo!, MSN, AOL, and AskJeeves.
80% of online transactions begin with a search. The internet is becoming more competitive as businesses are realizing the sales potential from targeted web searches – customers looking for products or services.
Those businesses with SEO optimized websites have a distinct advantage as their businesses are listed as the top of the search results page.
Targeted visitors to a website can provide publicity, revenue and exposure like no other. Investing in SEO, can have an exceptional rate of return.

So how does an SEO expert optimise my site?
SEO can be quite involved as there are many variables that determine a website’s ranking.
But briefly, the following steps are taken:

1. Keywords and Phrases Research
This is based on target market and competitor analysis to identify the best and most popular keywords and phrases to use.

2. Optimise the website’s content (text) and programming (hidden HTML code)
The content and navigation of your website will determine how deep those search engine ‘bots’ can index your website and rank its relevance. Keyword rich content and hidden html code (title tags, description tags, meta-tags, alt-tags and url file names), along with a sitemap will help your site be found and ranked in search results.

3. Submission to the major Search Engines and Google Maps Local Listing
In addition to submitting to the majors – Google, Yahoo!, MSN, AOL, and AskJeeves, your website will be submitted to over 200 various search engines used on the net.
We also submit a complimentary listing to Google Maps which shows your business in local searches up the top of the results page along with a pin showing where your business is on the local map.

4. Linking Strategy
A very important part of your SEO campaign is to provide quality inbound links to increase your website’s popularity. A quality link from a quality site (ie. Industry relevant site, government, or university site) is like a vote of popularity, thus increasing your ranking. Poor quality links (ie. link farms) may harm your ranking.

5. SEO Analysis Report & Maintenance
Although you may be too busy to read technical reports, this helps your webmaster or seo expert to monitor the effectiveness of your chosen keywords and phrases and makes adjustments if necessary to keep on top of the game in an ever evolving environment. It’s a good idea while the site is rising in rank to have maintenance performed for the first few months at least in order to make sure that your website optimization is effectively implemented and necessary adjustments made for best results.

How long does it take for SEO to work?
This is a bit technical so I’ll keep the jargon brief…
Search Engine results are based on relevance, quality, and popularity of information.
Search Engines send out ‘bots’ or ’spiders’ to ‘crawl’ the web twice a month. First, the search engine must find your site, then index it into a giant database. Various algorithms are used to sort the relevance of information and web links. The more people start clicking on these links, thereby generating traffic to your website, the more popular your site will seem, which will then reflect in your ranking and position on the search results page.

What Can I do in the Meantime?
You can kick-start your SEO ranking and get Page 1 Results for Searches straight away by using Google’s Pay-Per-Click (PPC) or Sponsored Links.
These are paid listing on the right-hand and top of the search pages.
Sponsored Links work on a monthly maintenance fee and a daily budget, which you stipulate (eg. $20). You only pay if your link is actually clicked on (eg. 20 cents per click). All the other times your link is displayed, it simply generates free exposure.
For fast results, a Pay-Per-Click campaign is well worth your advertising dollar.

Why would I use an SEO campaign instead of a Pay-Per-Click (PPC) campaign?
While SEO is a large upfront cost, it creates long-tem results. Search Listings are also displayed in the main area of the results search page. Most people click on the first 4 results in this area.
And although PPC creates fast results with a minimal upfront cost, it only creates for as long as you are paying your monthly fee.
PPC is a great complimentary activity to your SEO campaign by kick starting your rise in the rankings as well as getting hits while this is happening. After a few months, you can gauge the effectiveness of PPC be viewing the statistics of hits and the number of new customers. If your Return on Investment (ROI) is working then it’s worth while keeping as part of your ongoing marketing.
